WHAT ARE SEMICONDUCTORS?

Semiconductors are the materials whose electrical conductivity ranges between a conductor and a insulator.
For example:-Pure metals like silicon or germanium and compounds such as gallium arsenide or cadmium selenide.

The behavior of the charge carriers which include electrons, ions, electron holes at the junction is the principle of diodes, transistors and all modern electronics.

As the properties of a semi conductor can be changed by doping, they are used for amplification,switching..etc.

PROPERTIES

Semiconductor Devices can display a wide range of properties

1 VARIABLE CONDUCTIVITY

As the semiconductors are the poor conductors of electricity, they are modified by a technique called "Doping" and it is of two types
1. n-type
2. p-type
the unstable number of electrons are the cause of the flow of current through the material.

2 LIGHT EMISSIONS

A few semiconductors emit light instead of producing heat.these are used in the constructions of "light emitting diode(LED)."

3.THERMAL ENERGY CONVERSION

Semiconductors have a large amount of thermal electric power factors which make them useful in the generators,coolers..etc.
