When the positive battery is connected to P-region  of a semiconductor and the negative battery terminal to the N-region , the junction is said to be biased in the forward direction because it permits easy flow of current across the junction.

An applied voltage in the forward direction as indicated assists electrons in overcoming the coulomb ,barrier of the space charge in depletion region.

Due to the applied external voltage, the barrier potential is reduced which now allows more current to flow across the junction. Forward bias reduces the thickness of the depletion layer.
