The bridge rectifier circuits are mainly used as,
- A power rectifier circuit for converting AC power to DC power.
- A rectifying system in rectifier type AC meters, such as AC voltmeter, in which AC voltage under measurement is first converted into DC and measured with conventional meter. In this system, rectifying elements are either copper or selenium type.
- If input and output terminals in bridge wave rectifier are reversed without change in diodes, then it stops working.
- For one cycle, supply will get shorted through the forward biased diodes, while for the other cycle, circuit will be open. The output will be zero.
ADVANTAGES OF BRIDGE WAVE RECTIFIER:
- The current in both the primary and secondary of the power transformer flows for the entire cycle and hence for a given power output, power transformer of a small size and less cost may be used.
- AC voltage can directly be applied to the bridge rather than using a center tap.
- Current in secondary transformer is in opposite direction so the net DC component flowing is zero. Thus, this reduces the losses and danger of saturation.
- The circuit is applicable where large powers are required.
- Voltage appearing across the diodes get shared and hence, the circuits can be used for high voltage applications.
DISADVANTAGES OF BRIDGE WAVE RECTIFIER:
- The only disadvantage is the use of diodes as compared to the usage of two diodes in a normal full wave rectifier. This causes additional voltage drop.
